Unit 3 proposal

At the next stage of study in Unit 3, I would like to develop the idea – search for the poetry in experience and perception of time further and more specific to relate to the human body and the environment surrounds us.

Under the context which has already been built in the former study, I am going to try to utilize the materials as some signs or symbols as a part of the narrative of symbolism, to present a moment or an occasion of daily life. Like Gabriel Rico using objects collected from the vintage market or on the street, those can be seen as an archive of time, a certain kind of phenomenological experience from someone’s perspective.

Also, I think life somehow can be described as a labyrinth in time. Because I don't believe the time is simply linear. I would rather say time is more like a loop, a mystery, or a paradoxical labyrinth. It is so fascinating to hear how Borges indicates the time in verses: Time is the substance I am made of. Time is a river which sweeps me along, but I am the river; it is a tiger which destroys me, but I am the tiger; it is a fire which consumes me, but I am the fire.” So we all have got memory from the past, living in the present and uncertainty to the future, there is no such only one way in time. Time is an expansion from one’s body being a centre. To experience and perceive it rather than seeing it a physical-mechanical fact, I think this is the active way to see time and life itself as well.

To find the beauty in the stillness and blankness in a certain moment life it is possible if we slow our pace down or stop from time to time. To stop and look at the environment, this would either give us a rest to re-examine our life context or to enjoy the ephemeral but everlasting peace. ‘Lying back on a summer's afternoon, gazing at a mountain range on the horizon or watching a branch as it casts its shadow over our reclining limbs, we speak of breathing in the aura of those mountains or that branch.' The ‘aura’ is everywhere.

Drafts of next plan:

A designed small labyrinth made of wax bricks high and low on the floor.

Material: Wax, wicks, fake blood.

Size: 200 x 200 x 30 cm.

On the wall

There will be a video embedded in a window-like frame (ideal for a transparent one).

An audio with a voice keeps reading: “Time is the substance I am made of. Time is a river which sweeps me along, but I am the river; it is a tiger which destroys me, but I am the tiger; it is a fire which consumes me, but I am the fire.”
